Papers of the Iowa Universalist Convention documenting the church's growth, decline, and merger with the Unitarians in 1961. Contains correspondence related to the daily operation of the church; convention papers providing an official record of state conventions and committees; financial records, deeds, mortgages, checks, vouchers, and parish property records (of note are the records related to the Merle Hay Memorial Park, a financial disaster for the Iowa Convention in the 1930s); miscellaneous documents include news clippings, printed matters, and notes from Elva Tucker's thesis research; also contains volumes with material on finances, the Ladies Society, and Sunday schools.

The first Universalist preached in Iowa in 1837, by 1843 the Universalist parishes in Iowa had formed the Iowa Universalist Convention in Iowa City. The church expanded as Iowa grew and had fifty parishes by 1875. By 1900 only nine churches formed the backbone of the Iowa Convention. Herbert L. Stoughton and Effie McCollum Jones were two dominant church leaders in the first half of the twentieth century who appear in the records.
